Cost per placement calculator.

Enter the numbers from any two quotes. The calculator shows what each live placement costs, so very different offers can be compared side by side.

Short answer

Cost per live placement is what you pay divided by the placements that actually go live. For a retainer, the total is the monthly fee times the number of months. If a vendor bills only for live placements, a placement that does not run costs you nothing. Enter two quotes below to compare them on the same terms. The calculator runs in your browser and stores nothing.

How to use the numbers

  • Compare like with like. A live page on a news site, an impression and a social post are not the same thing.
  • Be honest about the live share. For pitching or a retainer, the share that turns into coverage is usually the uncertain part.
  • Price is not the only test. Ask who writes the story, whether you approve it, and how it is labeled. See seven questions to ask any vendor.

Questions

How do I compare a PR retainer with pay-per-placement?

Turn both into cost per live placement. For the retainer, enter the monthly fee times the months, the placements you expect, and a live share of 100. For the per-placement offer, divide the price by the placements, and check whether placements that do not run are billed.

What should count as a placement?

A live page on a news site where your story ran, that you can open and check. Impressions and estimated audience are not placements.

Does the calculator store my numbers?

No. It runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or saved.
